Mental Health Awareness in May

We know we’ve got lots to look forward to when it comes to the month of May (and beyond), but we need to remember the important stuff, like our mental health. Not always widely spoken about, but COVID-19 and the endless lockdowns have affected us all, however big or small. So, as your local and trustworthy shopping centre, we wanted to lend a helping hand for whenever you need one.

We’ll be talking about tips on how to talk to those who are suffering with their mental health, making sure you check in on loved and inspirational books to get your head in gear for a successful year ahead (plus more!).

Nature Is the New Theme!

Mental Health Awareness Week starts on the 10th of May and ends on the 16th, and as part of the week, the Mental Health Foundation have decided that ‘Nature’ is the theme for 2021.

Clever yet obvious! Access to nature has been crucial for millions of people during Lockdowns 1, 2 and 3. Individuals have re-discovered their love for local parks, simple beauties like running streams and long stretches of green countryside.

If you’d like to get involved in this charity or learn more, you can sign up to their newsletter by clicking here: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/newsletter

We also think pencilling in a leisurely stroll with your nearest and dearest would be a great idea. Friendly chat, optional hot chocolate and Fitbit on full blast! This way you can get your 10k steps in whilst talking about anything that’s been on your mind. Remember, a problem shared is a problem halved!

If you’re in need of a watch to track your steps or new clothes to stay cosy on walks and runs, we’d suggest popping to Sports Direct, Shoezone and even Tesco’s. Now that the centre has re-opened fully, we’d like to remind our customers to still wear their facemasks and to keep a safe distance from others when visiting.

Time to Talk…

Reaching out to friends or family members that may be suffering from mental health can be difficult. Regardless, you should always make the effort to check in and see how they’re doing… We’ve got a few tips for those who feel they may need it:

  • Set aside time with no distractions. Be sure to choose a time that works for both of you, so you’re not interrupted! Plus, providing an open space with no judgements is a must. (Tea and biscuits are optional!).
  • Talk about ways of de-stressing or how to practice self-care. This could involve exercise, getting a good night’s sleep or having a little fun with DIY facemasks one evening. (Plus, it’s just an overall mood booster!).
  • Always ask how you can help. Such a simple gesture can show just how much you care and willingness to listen. If their mental health isn’t something that’s up for discussion right now, it’s fine! If they know there’s a friend they can lean on, they’ll talk to you when they’re ready.

Want to set up a few activities for when you next see a loved one? We’ve got tonnes of ideas! Grab a new recipe books from WHSmith and unleash your inner Nigella Lawson.

Pick up circuit training equipment from Sports Direct – we’re talking weights, yoga mats or even a hula-hoop (a 30-minute sesh will get your heart pumping!).

Or pop to Poundland and get your arts and crafts on! You could choose a scrapbook, stock up on glitter, glue, paint and start to create your own picture book full of memories.

Practice Positive Self-Talk!

This is an important factor for us all! We tend to be our own worst critics, so giving ourselves a little affirmation from time to time will do you the world of good.

Research shows that even a small shift in the way you talk to yourself can influence your ability to control your feelings and thoughts, especially when you’re under stress.

An example could be instead of saying, ‘ugh I totally messed that up’, you could say ‘I’ll try that again, just a different way!’.

Or start using sticky notes! Simply write down a few positive quotes or qualities that you love about yourself, like: ‘You’re going to ace today’, ‘Your smile is amazing’. We know, it sounds cheesy, but it’ll be the best thing to see first thing in the morning stuck to your bathroom mirror!

Think this would work for you? Head to WHSmith to pick up the essentials. Be sure to get colourful pens to write your positive words in.

Books to Inspire You

Reading your thing? Check out these inspirational reads to get you in the right mindset to smash 2021!

  • You Are A Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero
  • Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life… And Maybe The World by William H. McRaven
  • Smarter, Faster, Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg
  • Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth
  • Choose Yourself by James Altucher

Be sure to grab new reads from Chesterfield Library, WHSmith or from Tesco’s. Now that the centre has re-opened fully, we’d like to remind our customers to still wear their facemasks and to keep a safe distance from others when visiting.

Treating Yourself Is Important!

Although you should always take the time out for a little TLC, you know, long bubble baths, Friday night treats from Market Fish & Chips or Pound Bakery and yoga sessions during lunch breaksTreating yourself with something you’ve had your eye on after completing a project at work or finishing the week on a positive note, even though you’ve been overwhelmed, is needed!!

Seeing as our stores have re-opened, why not create a wish list of all the things that have caught your eye and #ShopTilYouDrop when you’re next at the centre! First on our list is facemasks from Boots, baking utensils from Tesco or even a new fragrance from The Fragrance Shop. (The list goes on…).

From everyone here at Chesterfield Pavements, we’re hoping we’ve inspired you to keep positive and to help those suffering with mental health whenever you can. We’re looking forward to seeing many more faces at the centre, keeping in mind that we should all #ShopSafe when out and about. #SeeYouSoon

Being the Best You, You Can Be After Lockdown 3.0

Lockdown restrictions have broken many routines, changed up school schedules and even interfered with how you’ve been able to be the best you, you can be… Well, seeing as Lockdown measures are lessening, we want to inspire you on how to lead the happiest and healthiest life possible.

Whether you’ve slacked on the home workouts or haven’t been making the best choices when it comes to food (because takeaways seem to lessen the pain of being stuck indoors), we’re here to motivate you in making positive decisions for you and your family.

Get Your Cook On!

Make an evening of it! Whether it’s with your children or friends, why not create a fresh 3-course dinner? Your taste buds will be winning, and you’ll be feeling no guilt as you indulge into (moderately) healthy and homemade dishes.

Let’s give you an idea of what we mean…

Starters:
– Tomato & Cucumber Salad dressed with a little olive oil and dried mint.
– Baked tortilla chips with homemade guacamole.
– Classic prawn cocktail with a homemade thousand island sauce and sliced iceberg lettuce.

Mains:
– Ratatouille with a homemade red sauce. Be sure to top it with fresh basil, YUM!
– Lemon and herb chicken with a fresh mixed pepper salad.
– Lean turkey burger in lettuce wraps with sweet potato wedges.

Desserts:
– Sorbets to share.
– Fruity salad with a drizzle of single cream.
– (A little naughtier, but fun for the kids!) Cheat churros made with puff pastry! Remember, children especially are more likely to eat healthy foods if the presentation is appetising and if they have a hand in making some of the dishes, they’ll feel super proud that they created something so delicious.

Hungry yet? Hehe.

If we’ve tempted you into setting up an after-hours cooking club then get your skates on and head to the centre to pick up the essentials. We’re talking cookware and ingredients from Tesco, plus new tableware from Poundland. We’d like to remind our customers that now more of our shops have opened, you should still wear a facemask and keep a safe distance when visiting the centre.

Aiming for 10k A day!

We know, it sounds like a tall order but in hindsight, a trip mooching around the centre will probably use up 2-3k of your daily goal (including a few stop-offs at Pound Bakers or Peacocks Café for your fave coffee and sweet treat). Even if you’ve got your Fitbit or Apple watch on while you’re at home, it’ll count the steps you complete when taking the fresh washing upstairs, picking up dinner ingredients and just walking around while you do a little spring cleaning…

If 10k sounds a little steep, aim for 5-7k – we know you’ll smash it. We’d also recommend a morning or evening walk to enjoy with friends or family members. It’s a great way to get some cardio in while enjoying the company of your nearest and dearest.

If you’re in need of new walking/running gear, we’d recommend heading to Sports Direct for clothing and Shoezone for cosy shoes. You could even invest in a watch that’ll count your steps throughout the AM and PM. Be sure to pick up a snazzy new water bottle from WHSmith and Poundland when you’re next visiting the centre.

We’d like to remind our customers that now more of our shops have opened, you should still wear a facemask and keep a safe distance when visiting the centre.

Creating Fun Food for Kids

It’s easier for us adults to eat healthier, because we can make conscious decisions on what we’re putting into our body. But kids being kids, sweets and easily attainable processed foods are always a winner! Want to make a healthier change as we head into mid 2021? Well, we’ve got a few top tips on how to make healthy food a little more appealing…

1) Give them a choice! No one likes being told what to eat, so when possible give them an option between lettuce-wrapped fajitas or sausage and root vegetable mash for example.
2) Make fun faces with their food. Whether silly faces with fruit or smiley faces with cucumber finger sandwiches and baked crisps.
3) Don’t reference food as ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’ in front of your children. Instead of focusing too much on why certain foods are “healthy” or “unhealthy,” just try to serve healthy food options with each meal and lead by example.
4) Don’t ban junk food! When you ban something outright it will only seem more attractive to a child, so if you’re out somewhere and they want a chocolate bar or bag of crisps, don’t make a big deal out of it. We’re all allowed a little treat from time to time.
5) Let them help with the cooking! Getting involved in meal prepping, chopping up veggies and dressing the plate are all ways to get them excited about eating fresh, homemade food.
Inspired to get the kids eating more greens and fruits? Be sure to grab whatever you may need from the centre today. Whether it’s cooking utensils from Poundland and Tesco, or inspiring recipe books from WHSmith.

We’d like to remind our customers that now more of our shops have opened, you should still wear a facemask and keep a safe distance when visiting the centre.

Family Activities for The Win!

Get out and about with the family on the weekends. We’re talking football matches with parents vs children, circuit training in the local park or even just taking the family doggo for a run-around.
Need any extra equipment to prep for your weekend full of fun? Be sure to grab the ‘essentials’ (like footballs, hula hoops, rackets and more) from Sports Direct, Tesco and Poundland.

We’re hoping that our ideas on keeping things fun and fresh will inspire you all to be more motivated for 2021 and beyond. We want all of our wonderful customers to live both happy and healthy lives – and with any tips you grab from this Style article, be sure to tag us in your social posts so we can re-share your snaps. We look forward to seeing you at the centre soon, remember to keep safe! #StillInThisTogether

This is our Top 5 Books for Kids to Read

The Centre have created a list of top 5 books to get kids interested, with a variety of subjects from kindness, love and dreaming big.

  • Tomorrow I’ll Be Kind by Jessica Hishe: A heartfelt reminder to always treat others with kindness.
  • A Little Book About 123’ by Leo Lionni: A new board book for babies & toddlers alike. They’ll get children to love counting along with the adorable little mice features in the read.
  • Just Like Me by Vanessa Newton: A collection of mini stories that celebrate different girls from all sorts of backgrounds with various goals – girls who feel powerful, who give back to other and who love. They share their thoughts & dreams throughout.
  • The Box Turtle by Vanessa Roeder: Cuteness overload coming your way! A little turtle, born without a shell, so his parents gave him a cardboard box instead – just so he felt the same.
Terrance the turtle learns lessons in loving yourself, embracing weirdness and forming friendships.
  • Grandma’s Garden by Hillary & Chelsea Clinton: Grandma Dorothy passes on her love of nature to her granddaughter. An uplifting story of their time together, celebrating a unique bond that forms across generations when sharing things, we love.

PS: If you’re struggling to get your children to pick up a book, you could always try the following educational sites for your kids to read through and review instead!

*Please remember that due to the current National Lockdown, not all our stores are open at the moment.

Home Workout for the Win

Let’s get moving! Home workouts burst onto the scene during the first Lockdown and ever since have become a part of most people’s daily routine.

Whether you want to get fit while furloughed or enjoy time with your kids after a long day of home schooling, we suggest looking into the below coaches:

Be inspired by Joe Wicks: Great workout for parents & children alike! Don’t forget to check out his social channels so you don’t miss out on those live PE workouts.

Courtney Black: A young talent with one goal in mind – to get people healthy, happy, and confident in themselves. She provides great workouts for women and men all around the world. We particularly love the sound of her Warrior Wednesday’s – so, if you’re up for the challenge, sign up with your partner, mum or friend and kickstart your workout journey.

If you’re in need of new gym accessories like water bottles, be sure to pop to Poundland and Tesco at the centre. Don’t forget that once all stores re-open, you could grab extra gym wear from Sports Direct.

*Please remember that due to the current National Lockdown, not all of our stores are open at the moment.

TV Winners: The 2021 TV Guide

Seeing as home will be our best friend for the foreseeable, you may as well enjoy a little ‘you time’ by binge watching the greats of 2021.

Top on our list is:

The Pembrokeshire Murders on Channel 4

Wanda Vision: Disney +

Conversations with Friends: BBC 3

Line of Duty: BBC 1

Landscapers: Sky Atlantic

The Serpent: BBC 1

The Pursuit of Love: BBC 1/Amazon Prime

In need of snacks (popcorn, wine & choccies)? Head to the centre and pick out a few of your favourites from Poundland, Tesco or even Pound Bakery & Greggs for a takeaway treat!

Self-Help: How to Unwind

You can’t let the pandemic get you down, so we need to make time for SELF-LOVE. We’ve got a few tips & tricks on how to unwind while you’re at home alone, with flat mates or family.

Mani Pedi Time! Pop to Boots and pick-up new nail polishes to get creative with. We’d HIGHLY recommend a cheeky facemask here or conditional hair mask there… Why not go all out and treat yourself to an evening of TLC? Men can also get involved by trialling out charcoal facemasks and new beard oils or cleansing moisturisers!

Meditation & Yoga: Find your ‘zen’ by meditating in the morning or before bed. We’ve heard that meditation (and yoga) has been a significant way to reduce stress… We’d suggest that if you’re new to the yoga scene, to pop YouTube on and start with a beginner’s class & build up your stretching strength. When you’re next at the centre picking up your essentials, you could grab a new yoga book from WHSmith for a little inspo.

Engaging with Others: It’s so significant that we talk to friends & family during these hard times. Even reaching out to those we may not know well, but who seem to be struggling just to see how they are could make an impactful difference to one’s life. Many people find that opening up about their struggles have helped them tremendously – so taking a couple minutes out of your day to ask or chat can make the world of difference.

So, be sure to check in on the ones you love from time to time. FYI, you could do this over the phone, text, social media, video calls or sending letters.

We think we’ve given you plenty of ideas when it comes to health, happiness and self-help during 2021 and beyond. And even though some shops are currently closed, be sure to make the most of your time at home, because once we’re summoned to work, there’s no going back! We’re hoping for the rest of the year to be as positive as we believe it can be, and we look forward to seeing you at the centre soon. #KindnessIsKey #PositiveVibesOnly

Scents Worth Celebrating

It’s that time of year when thinking about presents for those we love can feel a mix of bamboozling and fun! The standard gift card, Christmas spiced biscuits or pack of new socks just isn’t cutting the mustard and you’re looking to  pick up presents that show you ‘know them’, ‘love them’ and have ‘spent time’ thinking about what they’d like to unwrap come Christmas morning (or any special occasion in fact!).

So, we’ve decided to take the hard work out of finding the perfect gift by giving you new ideas when it comes to presents, must-have fragrances and, even, suggestions to reflect their favourite season and mood. Who wouldn’t love a new scent for Christmas?!  So, here comes Chesterfield Pavements, to the rescue, with all the inspo you could need…

*Please remember that some of our stores will be closed from the 5th November, but there’s no need to worry! In preparation for the shops re-opening, you could make a list of the things you need to buy, and for which loved one it’s for! That way, you’ll be super prepared once the centre is fully open and you can get all the things you need in no time at all.

Autumn & Winter Aromas, At Your Service!

There’s so much to love about this time of year.  From green to amber, acorns begin to fall from the trees and the leaves change colour. This is the season for deep, seductive fragrances, those containing spicy, musky tones that linger on the skin and clothing for hours on end. Look out for fragrances that contain hints of musk, sandalwood, jasmine and amber especially.

You’ll find seasonal favourites in most of our stores (and online too!). We would recommend Poundland for added extras when looking for Christmas gift inspiration, or something small to brighten up your own home (while making it smell divine!). Pieces like incense sticks, candles and wax melts will do just the trick, plus who wouldn’t love one of these additional gifts with a new bottle of perfume? Ummmm, we would!!

Seeing as we’re quite close to the festive season too, you’re probably wondering; ‘What kind of scents should I be looking out for?’ Well, it’s all about citrus, spiced cinnamon, vanilla and cardamon – these warming tones will help lift spirits on a cold Winter’s day.

Select a fragrance that is reminiscent of holiday scents, like, pomegranate, vanilla bean, sharp lemon, or zesty orange. Some spiced aromas can be a little harsh during the warmer months of the year, but they bring a sense of warmth to the crisp winter air – so, you’ll feel cosy and fuzzy with just a quick spritz! We recommend an online browse on The Fragrance Shop  site and viewing their extensive range – they have new, traditional, and promotional scents that will most certainly tickle your fancy!

For a little added inspiration, we think it would be fun to match the fragrance you choose with a scented candle or a beauty gift set, including a fragrant hand or face cream from Boots after shopping for any lockdown essentials. You could even push the boat out and get a box of infused tea bags to match the season or perfume you’ve said yes to! (We’ll go for a cinnamon flavoured tea if you don’t mind…)

Need a ‘Spring’ In Your Step?

If the thought of a gloomy winter ahead, brings feelings of dread, why not consider a scent which will reflect freshness, lightness, and feelings of joyful nostalgia – whilst we can’t make Spring come any sooner, there’s no reason why you can’t choose a fragrance that transports your loved one to the warmer months.

Pick a perfume or cologne that includes notes of lily of the valley, peonies, and refreshing violets. For individuals that prefer scents which are extra crisp, odours of mint, basil and orange blossom are just as appealing for the springtime. (We’re getting hungry just thinking about it…)

When you’re next at Chesterfield Pavements, be sure to pop into Tesco for new favourites for yourself or as a gift for a family member or friend! Don’t forget, you can browse Bodycare online too… Whether it’s for new scented lotions, facial masks or a new body mist. Plus, if it’s not in store, you can always order it online to be delivered straight to your home! *Happy Face*

Dreaming of An Escape to The Sun?

If you’re buying for someone who thrives on sunny getaways, perhaps they need a fragrance that gets them there in spirit?

Choose a fragrance which reflects that happy, sweet, and sexy mood that is often related to the summer holidays, alfresco date nights and spending extra time with your loved ones.

We’re thinking warm sweet florals like roses and orange blossoms, along with fresh fruit scents like raspberry and peach.  Select more tropical notes, including honeysuckle, island flowers, and sea salt – all remembrances of what we’re currently missing! Long, sun-soaked days on a beach…

Opting for fresher, cooler aromas contrast the hot weather perfectly. Little tip for you all, summer perfumes should be applied lightly to the skin, as their scent is much stronger due to the high temperatures they’re intended to be worn in. We’d suggest an online look at  The Fragrance Shop or  Boots (which you can also visit at the centre) – they have an abundance of perfumes, body mists and gift sets that will have you spoilt for choice! *Spritz spritz*

No one said that buying for a birthday, valentines or an anniversary in the new year is too early… we think if you see something fab, grab it while you can, especially if it’s currently on offer!

Now that we’ve given you tonnes of ideas for Christmas and beyond, we’ll be excited to see you, in the centre, on the other side of lockdown, buying a perfume or cologne for that special someone. Happy shopping from Chesterfield Pavements!

Save Your Skin… from Chilly, Wintery Weather!

Dry, cracked skin, begone!!

We have a few tips and tricks on how to maximise moisture and minimise any discomfort your skin may have due to the incoming chilliness… Whether you’re in need of a soothing facemask, scented soaps or nutrient-infused exfoliators, the centre will be here to help and stop the dropping temperature from chapping any lips! *Takes out lip balm*

To make things super simple, we’re going to give you a few essential tips, with the retailers that’ll become your new best friends, so sit back, relax and read away…

Moisturise, relax, rinse

Layer On & Hydrate!!

You must love a product that hydrates and gives your skin a little extra life! Why serum you ask? Because serums offer a liquid-like format, especially those containing Vitamin C! They help even out your skin tone and improve the appearance after continual use. They can also be used to combat signs of aging, plump up your skin and reduce the presence of wrinkles and fine lines. Who wouldn’t want that, right?

Lock in moisture with a cream…

There are 3 types of moisturising agents:

  • Humectants: Attract and hold on to water.
  • Emollients: These are skin softeners that sink in and help bind cells together, making your skin feel smoother. (Could use jojoba oil and shea butter).
  • Occlusives: These block the water in your skin from evaporating. During your ‘morning routine’ for example, this ‘occlusives’ layer comes last, as it does the job of locking in the moisture! (Could use petroleum jelly, mineral oil and lanolin).

Need a new lathering cream to get the job done? Walk through the aisles of Boots and more for tonnes of options. We think a scented product would be nice too, smelling like a fresh bouquet or coconut all day doesn’t sound too bad at all…

 Facial Fun

DIY Avocado & Honey Facemask:

You need: 1 smashed avocado and two teaspoons of honey.

Method: As good on the face as it is on the plate, smashed avo mixed with a couple teaspoons of honey will treat dry, flaky skin. Mix and scrub your face with it for a minimum of 10 minutes. Leave it on for half an hour and then rinse with warm water. *Both ingredients contain humectants, which are used to reduce the loss of moisture from the skin. You can thank us later…

Treating your skin to a packet or DIY facial that will deliver an extra boost of hydration to your skin is just what you need after a long week at work! This is particularly good to do in the morning, or before you’re about to get ready for a night on the town… You could even buy some of those rejuvenating under-eye or lip smoothing masks (they work wonders!!)

You can pick up a few of your favourite facemasks from Bodycare if you’re feeling fancy, maybe you can grab a few ‘relaxing’ essentials (or even the facemask ingredients!) from Tesco –  Avocados, candles or even a new novelty mug for your infused tea to enjoy while your mask is hardening…

Lip Balm Love

You need a lip-smacking balm that’ll prevent uncomfortable chapping. The balm will work to moisturise dried tissue in the lip, while protecting the area from exposure to wind and cold temperatures!

We recommend the retailers below if you need a new balm to get you through the upcoming (and most likely) chilly season. *Brrrrr* Grab a few Poundland favourites in store today! They’ll have everything from moisturising to scented and flavoured!

Shower or Bath? Moisturise Immediately!

You may not know this but applying moisturiser on damp skin is the way forward! During wintertime however, it can be a little nippy once you pop out the shower or bath – which means you’re probably not in the mood to stand around lathering up your skin. So instead you get dressed or lie on your bed, tightly covered in your towel waiting to dry off a bit.

Whip out the body cream and don’t even leave the bathroom to apply – because walking from your bathroom to your room will evaporate the water droplets you need.

Nails, Hands & Cuticles Need TLC too!

Rough feeling hands are just the worst, plus your nails and cuticles take a bit of a battering once the weather becomes cooler! The nail shop queues even quieten down seeing as it’s too chilly to leave the comfort of your cosy blanket set up at home…

Opt for a new hand & nail cream that’ll keep skin smooth, supple and protected. You can grab a handbag-sized bottle from Boots – to be honest, you might want a little snack in there for later, so we recommend popping to Pound Bakery or Greggs for a delicious pastry or sweet treat.

Now that we’ve given you a few handy tricks on how to keep your skin silky smooth as cooler weather commences, we’d love for you to pop down to the centre and pick up all the essentials you need! We look forward to seeing you soon.

Get your mid-September #HealthOn

Suddenly it’s mid-September, schools are back in session, some people are back to work, and in the shops you can start to see Halloween and Christmas starting to take over… (We know it sounds crazy, but it’s always closer than you think!).

It’s a common trend around this time of year that healthy eating and keeping fit go somewhat out the window as nights start to draw in, but egg white brekkies and cashew nuts as midday snacks isn’t always practical when your routine is getting back on track!

And seeing as the entire world has had a tough time of it this year, (virus that shall not be named) we thought it was time we took matters into our own hands, rather than waiting for ‘summer season’ to re-grace us with its presence, reminding us to get healthy for those holiday snaps. Now is the time to get your #HealthOn and Chesterfield Pavements is here to help you with your journey!

Get into Fitness!

It could be time to swap your croissant for a cross trainer (well you can have one or two still, just in moderation). If you can make it to a weekly fitness classes, or squeeze in a session whenever you can, you’ll keep burning calories to keep on top of your health for 2020. You might as well enter the new year feeling your very best, right?

Although, this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a sweet treat or cool coffee frappe from Massarella’s

Upgrade you Leisure Wear & Accessories

If you’re in need of moist-wicking clothes to keep you fresh during workouts, daily walks or staying active with the kids come weekends, we suggest you head to Sports Direct for leggings, trackies, trainers and more!

Plus, Tesco & Poundland will have the accessories you’ll need to keep hydrated while getting your sweat on: water bottles and refreshing energy drinks!

Top Up your Vital Vitamins

After COVID’s peak, and with a possible further wave on the way, we think it’s super important to keep our immune systems in tip-top shape. We’re highlighting below the 8 best vitamins and minerals to support a healthy immune system:

You can pick these up from Boots & Tesco:

  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Folic acid
  • Iron
  • Selenium
  • Zinc

Get into Healthy Habits

You, your kids, family members and friends can remain on the health track without straying by adopting a few healthy habits here and there! These habits will keep individuals entertained, healthy and even help boost your child’s immune system in various ways. So, it’s win, win really!

  • Serve more fruits and vegetables. This can be as part of crudité platters for snacking in between meals or fruit bowls as desserts instead of heaps of cookie dough or bags of sweeties. If you (or your littluns’ deserve a little sweet treat, add a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate sauce over your fresh fruit!). You can always buy new dessert bowls or swanky wooden platters from Tesco if you fancy new tableware!
  • Boost sleep time! Sleep is good, and we want to make sure the whole family is getting a good 8 hours minimum. Try a pillow spray at bedtime, or listening to soft music to help you relax.
  • Exercise as a family. Exercising doesn’t have to be a chore, so enjoy the time together in the park or garden! Keeping kids active is harder than ever now that electronic games have taken over the 21st century. Head to Shoe Zone, Tesco & Sports Direct to pick the kiddies out new football boots with a ball to match, plus any accessories to get them in the mood. Or get creative with bits from Poundland & Whsmith to ensure that outdoor activities always stay fun. We think, creating ‘completion medals’ or following ‘circuit cones’ is a great place to start!
  • Guard against germ spread. Head to the centre’s cleaning haven – Boots will be your go-to. Stock up on kitchen supplies, home cleaning products and anti-bac that’ll pop into your bag easily. These items will kill germs before you can say ‘spread’!

We’ve given you our go-to shops when you visit Chesterfield Pavements. Now it’s up to you to kick-start a healthy September and beyond.

AN ‘80S REVIVAL

Some people believe the style of the ‘80s should remain in the past. But this season heralds a revival of blue eyeshadow. And if you want to be really bold and daring with your eyeshadow, why not opt for a splash of blue glitter?

Eye Shadow

If you’re not brave enough to attempt blue eyeshadow, some blue eyeliner on the bottom lash line is also a trend spotted on the SS18 catwalks.

Blue Eye Shadow

Barry M glitter and Fixer 4 Pack £14.99, L’Oreal Paris Infallible Eyeshadow Paint £5.99, No7 Stay Perfect Shade and Define £8.00, L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Eye Quad Turquoise Spell £7.99

THE LIGHT & NATURAL LOOK

If you’re not one for bright colours or bold cat-eyes, a trend you can embrace this season is the natural look. Learn to love your own skin this summer and pare back your makeup to the essentials. Embrace your freckles like Emma Watson and draw attention to your eyes with a simple swipe of mascara.

The key to this look is to make sure your eyebrows are neatly groomed, and a light application of blusher or highlighter will add a glow to your complexion without appearing too heavy. And when it comes to your lips, a clear gloss or natural lipstick is the perfect finishing touch to your natural look.

Be in the running for a new challenge

The London Marathon takes place this month, signifying one of the biggest challenges for recreational runners taking part. It’s a daunting and monumental experience for marathon newbies, and an inspirational time for anyone wondering “could I do that too?” With the right training and commitment to a healthy eating plan, you too could run 26 miles. This handy guide breaks down what you need to know to get yourself in the running for next year’s London Marathon, and for a fitter, healthier you in just 17 weeks.

BEGINNERS ESSENTIALS

Don’t even think about putting a step forward before investing in the best pair of trainers to suit your feet. You don’t need to go for the most expensive pair, as long as they support the shape of your foot.

Make sure you go to a specialist shoe or sports shop with experts that can appraise the way your feet move and have knowledge of specialist brands, such as Brooks, Asics, Reebok, Nike, New Balance and Adidas.

Shoes that don’t fit your feet properly can lead to muscular imbalances in the body and allow for foot, knee and hip injuries.

SHAPE UP

As important as it is to practice running, it is just as important to get fit and strong. Whether you exercise alone in the gym or attend classes with friends, building strength and stamina is the key to success.  There are some great resources to help you get into shape, from specialist classes to training courses online and in apps.

The Virgin Money London Marathon website has a three-level 17-week training plan, one for beginners, an intermediate plan and an advanced plan. Pick the level you need and use this as a guide on your journey to the starting line.

Add several supplements to your healthy diet and fitness regime to help your body on its road to fitness. Talk to an expert at a health food shop where you’ll find a plethora of running and fitness supplements, as well as to your pharmacist about supplements and your doctor for your overall health.

  • BCAAs – Amino Acids that help to maximise muscle growth.
  • Creatine – Helps with muscles development and building strength.
  • Fish Oil – Omega 3 assists with cognitive function, fat burning and hormonal output.
  • Green powder – Can help make up for the shortfall of nutrients and minerals you don’t receive from eating enough leafy greens.
  • Vitamin D – In the UK many people can suffer from low vitamin D levels, which can affect bone density and energy production.
  • Whey Protein – Rich in BCAAs for repairing sore muscles and trigger growth.

EAT WELL

What you eat is just as important as the exercise and training you undertake to train for a marathon. You should rely on supplements to give your body the nutrients that it needs. One of the most important aspects of any diet is to drink an adequate amount of water. While the amount you should drink differs for each individual, the general guideline is between 2-3 litres per day, and it is also important that you drink water during each training session to replenish the fluids you lose.

There are certain foods that can assist in different aspects of your training and nutritional needs. You can find a full break down of nutritional advice on the Virgin Money London Marathon website, but some of the tips include:

  • Marmite, apples and avocado to boost cardio.
  • Spinach, eggs and almonds to help maintain muscle.
  • Watermelon, coffee and bran flakes to help you run faster.
  • Blue berries, honey and smoked mackerel to help prevent injury.
  • Pine nuts, green tea and coconut oil to help you get lean.
  • Kale, walnuts and white button mushrooms to help you stay healthy.

Style up for the party season

When it comes to festive season parties, it’s not only your outfit that takes centre stage, but your whole look. Your appearance will be judged, and while the saying goes ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, unfortunately we do. To help you sparkle this festive season, we have put together the top looks you need to take note of.

FIND THE FOCAL POINT

No matter how many parties you’re attending this festive season, you need to decide on the focal point of each of your party looks. There’s no need to buy a new outfit for each party, but mix it up with different accessories, and makeup and hair looks. If you want the focus to be on a stunning pair or shoes you just bought, go for a more understated dress, or play up the dress by wearing minimal jewellery.

And when it comes to your makeup, there are many trends at the moment, from crazy glitter looks to coloured eyeshadow. Or tone down your makeup completely and go with the nude makeup trend.

OUTFITS THAT WOW

For many women, an important aspect of any night out is their outfit. This season you’re in for a treat, as lace, sequins and velvet are hot trends that will add luxury and glamour to any look. Hair heroes to battle the winter

With the approach of winter it’s important to take stock of your beauty routine, as you will need to change or enhance it for the colder, harsher months, as the elements will take their toll not only on your skin, but on your hair too. But there are steps you can take to ensure that you continue to have glossy, healthy hair even as the thermostat drops.

SALON SERVICES

Nothing keeps hair in good condition like a regular trim. Daily styling with hairdryers, curling tongs and straightening irons can damage hair, as can hair colouring products. To keep your hair in good shape, it is recommended to have it trimmed every six weeks, or every nine weeks for longer hair. For an affordable hair cut look out for model nights in local salons or head into budget chains such as Regis and Supercuts where a basic cut starts at £14.95 and a cut and blow dry will set you back £22.45. Also look out for promotions on conditioning treatments; it’s amazing what a little bit of salon TLC can offer.

HOME SALON HEROES

You can’t leave all your haircare to the professionals; you need to take control at home too. Proper maintenance continues with your at home beauty regime, from using the right products, to how regularly you wash and style your hair. Look out for brilliant beauty buys in department stores, drugstores and budget stores, get hold of 3 for 2 offers and claim a ton of beauty gifts with purchase.

A good conditioner is essential to restore and maintain your hair’s natural moisture, glossiness and texture. If you’re unsure what products to use, speak to your stylist. But one of the popular ingredients that great for healthy hair is Argan oil. With shampoos, conditioners, hair oils and treatments containing this moisture rich ingredient, every step of your haircare regime can help boost your hair’s health.

Herbal Essences Bio: Renew Conditioner 400ml Argan Oil £6, Lee Stafford ARGANOIL from Morocco Nourishing Conditioner 250ml £10.99 at Boots, OGX Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner 385ml £6.99 and OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Conditioner 385ml £7.99, Garnier Ultimate Blends Argan Oil Shine Conditioner 400ml £2.50 and Hask Argan Oil Repairing Conditioner 355ml £6.99 from Superdrug, Boots and Savers

If a good shampoo and conditioner doesn’t seem to be meeting your winter hair needs, a good treatment or deep nourishing conditioner may be required.

John Frieda Full Repair Deep Conditioner Mask 150ml £6.99, Shea Moisture Shea Masque 326ml £10.99, TRESemmé Oleo Radiance Creamy Moisturiser Mask 300ml £6.99 and Vatika Naturals Egg Protein Conditioning Hair Mask 500g £5.99 at Superdrug, Boots and Savers

On top of deep conditioning, there are plenty of options of oils and serums you can apply and leave on wet or dry hair that will help add and lock in moisture.

TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Colour Serum 125ml £6.05, Argan Oil Hair Treatment 100ml £12.99, Grow Gorgeous Shine Serum 60ml £22.00, Hask Argan Oil from Morocco Repairing Hair Shine Oil 18ml £2.49 and OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Weightless Dry Oil 118m £6.99 at Superdrug, Boots and Savers

PROTECT & PERFECT

When it comes to styling your hair in winter, it is important to thoroughly dry your hair before going outside to protect your hair from becoming brittle. If you are using heated styling tools like hairdryers, straightening irons or curling tongs, invest in a good heat protection spray to help minimise any damage to your hair and make sure that you use a wide tooth comb and not a brush if your hair is wet to avoid stretching and damaging your hair.

Boots Style Works Heat Protect Spray 185ml £2.59, TRESemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protect Spray £6.05 Mark Hill Styling Heat Protection 200ml and Style Expertise Straight Spray 100ml £2.99 at Superdrug & Boots

COVER UP

Aside from using the right products to wash, dry and style your hair, it is still important to take steps to protect it from the elements. Hats are super fashion forward, look fabulous, will protect your hair from the wind, rain and snow, and will also help cut down on how often you need to wash your hair as it won’t get dirty from the elements.

Grey Brushed Knit Beanie Hat £4.99, Burgundy Double Faux Fur Pom Pom Beanie £9.99, Black Baker Boy Hat £9.99 and Mink Cable Knit Faux Fur Bobble Beani £7.99 all at New Look
